What Is Assam Tea?

Assam tea is grown in the Assam region of north eastern India, one of the world’s most famous tea producing regions.

Celebrated for its rich flavour, deep amber colour and naturally malty character, Assam tea has become one of the most widely enjoyed teas globally. Its strength and smooth body make it especially popular as an everyday tea and as the foundation of many traditional English Breakfast blends.

Unlike lighter black teas, Assam tea delivers a full and more rounded cup that works particularly well both with and without milk.

Why Assam Tea Tastes So Distinctive

The distinctive flavour of Assam tea comes down to the terroir and a combination of climate, soil and tea plant variety.

Assam’s tropical conditions, high rainfall and fertile soil encourage the tea leaves to develop strong flavour compounds and natural depth. Assam tea is produced using the Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant, a large leaf variety known for creating full bodied and more expressive black teas.

These conditions help produce the smooth malt character and strength that define authentic Assam tea.

What Does Assam Tea Taste Like?

Assam tea is best known for its:

  • rich malt flavour
  • full body
  • smooth strength
  • deep amber colour
  • warming and rounded finish

Many tea drinkers choose Assam tea because it feels comforting, satisfying and easy to enjoy as part of a daily routine. Its natural body also allows it to pair exceptionally well with milk.

Second flush Assam tea, harvested later in the growing season, is especially prized for its deeper flavour and smooth balance.

Loose Leaf Tea and Pyramid Tea Bags

Our Assam tea collection is available in both loose leaf tea and biodegradable pyramid tea bags.

Loose leaf Assam tea offers a more traditional brewing experience and allows greater control over brewing strength and flavour. Pyramid-shaped, biodegradable tea bags provide convenience while still giving the tea leaves space to infuse properly during brewing.

Both formats use carefully selected Assam tea sourced from our family tea gardens in Pengeri, Assam.

Single Origin Assam Tea

At Dehing Tea, we focus on single origin Assam tea grown in our family tea gardens.

Single origin tea allows the natural flavour of the region to remain clear and consistent in the cup. Rather than blending teas from multiple unknown sources, single origin Assam tea reflects the climate, soil and craftsmanship of one specific tea growing region.

This direct connection to source also helps preserve freshness and flavour more effectively from garden to cup.

Why More Tea Drinkers Are Choosing Assam Tea

Assam tea continues to grow in popularity among tea drinkers looking for stronger and more flavourful black tea.

It is especially popular among those who enjoy:

  • breakfast tea
  • tea with milk
  • rich black tea
  • full flavoured loose leaf tea
  • traditional everyday tea

Its balance of strength, smoothness and depth makes Assam tea suitable for both experienced tea drinkers and those exploring premium black tea for the first time.
