What Is Assam Second Flush Tea?
Assam Second Flush tea refers to the second major tea harvest of the year in Assam, India, typically taking place from late spring into early summer.
This harvest is widely considered the most desirable because the tea leaves develop greater depth, richness and balance as the growing season progresses. Second flush Assam teas are especially prized for their smooth malt character, full body and naturally rounded flavour profile.
Many tea drinkers consider second flush Assam to represent the classic flavour profile most strongly associated with premium Assam black tea.
Why Is Second Flush Assam Tea So Highly Regarded?
The conditions during the second flush season allow the tea leaves to mature more fully before plucking. This contributes to a richer and more complex flavour compared with earlier harvests.
Second flush Assam tea is particularly known for:
- rich malt flavour
- smooth full body
- deep amber colour
- balanced strength
High quality 2nd flush black teas also often contain golden tips, sometimes referred to as “tippy tea”, which are associated with smoother and more refined flavour characteristics.
What Does Assam 2nd Flush Tea Taste Like?
Second flush Assam tea is rich, warming and naturally malty.
Compared with first flush Assam tea, second flush teas generally feel fuller, smoother and more rounded in the cup. Many tea drinkers describe the flavour as comforting and satisfying, particularly when enjoyed as a morning tea or with milk.
Its strength and body are also why Assam second flush tea forms the foundation of many traditional English Breakfast blends.
Why Assam Tea Produces Such Distinctive Flavour
The Assam region’s tropical climate, high rainfall and fertile soil create ideal conditions for producing bold and expressive black tea. Assam tea is made primarily from the Camellia sinensis var. assamica plant, a large leaf tea variety naturally associated with stronger body and richer flavour.
Together, the climate, soil and tea plant help create the depth and malt character that define Assam Second Flush tea.
