Can You Reuse Loose Leaf Tea? How Many Times Can You Brew Assam Tea and Green Tea?

Not all teas behave the same way when brewed more than once.

At Dehing Tea, the teas most suited to re-steeping are our loose-leaf teas, where the leaves have more room to unfurl and gradually release their flavour.

Assam Green Tea

Our Assam Green Tea is particularly well suited to a second infusion.

The first brew typically delivers fresh vegetal notes and gentle sweetness. A second brew often becomes softer and smoother, with less intensity but still plenty of character.

Many green tea drinkers find that a quality loose-leaf green tea can comfortably provide two enjoyable cups from the same leaves.

Assam 2nd Flush Black Tea

Our signature Assam 2nd Flush Black Tea is known for its rich malt character and full body.

While the first infusion delivers the boldest flavour, a second brew can reveal a smoother side of the tea, often with less astringency and a lighter finish.

For tea drinkers who enjoy exploring subtle flavour differences, a second infusion is well worth trying.

Tea Bags

Our biodegradable tea bags can also be brewed again, although the second cup will generally be lighter than the first.

Because the tea is broken into smaller particles, flavour is released more quickly during the initial brew compared with loose-leaf tea.

For the best re-steeping experience, loose-leaf tea remains the preferred choice.

How Long Should You Steep the Second Brew?

As a simple rule:

  • First infusion: Brew as normal.
  • Second infusion: Add 1–2 extra minutes.
  • Third infusion (if desired): Extend slightly further.

Avoid over-steeping in an attempt to force flavour from exhausted leaves. A gentle second brew usually produces a more balanced and enjoyable cup.

The Bottom Line

If you're drinking quality loose-leaf Assam tea, don't throw the leaves away after one cup.

Both Assam Green Tea and Assam 2nd Flush Black Tea can often provide a satisfying second infusion, allowing you to experience different layers of flavour while getting even more enjoyment from every brew.
